Celebrating the life of

Robert Franklin Long, Jr.

October 17, 1943 - September 21, 2013

Robert Franklin Long, Jr.

Robert F. Long, Jr.

Robert "Bob" Franklin Long, Jr., 69, of Savannah, died Saturday, September 21, while visiting family in his childhood hometown of Somerset, Kentucky. Bob was born on October 17, 1943, in Paducah, KY, the son of Robert F. Long, Sr. and Elizabeth E. Long. He grew up in Somerset, KY and later married his high school sweetheart, Phyllis, also of Somerset. Bob and Phyllis recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in June.

Bob graduated college and medical school from the University of Kentucky. Following his medical school graduation, Bob moved to Savannah and was one of the first of two radiology residents with Memorial Medical Center. He practiced radiology with Memorial Medical Center for 37 years where he became a partner with Radiology Associates of Savannah and served as staff radiologist at Memorial Medical Center, Chief of the Nuclear Medicine Section and Chairman of the Department of Radiology. Bob considered his greatest professional achievement his mentoring of radiology residents and was frequently voted "Best Teacher" by his residents.

Although he was a native of Kentucky, Bob embraced the coastal lifestyle with a passion. He loved sailing and made several trips from Savannah to the Bahamas by sailboat. Bob also loved duck hunting and was a member of a conservation-minded duck hunting group. More recently, he enjoyed smoking his pipe and reading on his back porch overlooking the marsh. He and his wife, Phyllis, are members of St. James Catholic Church and were very involved with Our Lady of Good Hope Chapel on Isle of Hope.

Bob is preceded in death by an infant daughter, Anne Trayce Long and his father, Robert F. Long, Sr. He is survived by his wife, Phyllis Long; his daughters, Jennifer L. Patterson and Mary L. Snowden; his sons, Robert F. Long III and James A. Long; his grandchildren, Phillip Patterson, Morgan Patterson, Elizabeth Snowden and Evangeline Long. He is also survived by his mother, Elizabeth Long; his siblings, David E. Long and Barbara L. Hughes; several nieces and nephews; and his two faithful dogs, Kansas and Max.

Visitation will be 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, September 24, 2013 at Fox and Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, September 25, 2013 at St. James Catholic Church with Father Mark Ross officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, Tennessee 38105 or online at www.stjude.org.

GUEST BOOK

Our family is saddened with the news of Dr. Long's passing. He has been part of our 'family' since I began working at Memorial in 1979. He was one of the most compassionate and caring people I have ever had the pleasure of working with. He knew and loved us all and we loved him back. He enriched our lives and so many others, he will be missed. His family is in our prayers.

- Nancy Cone, Cocoa, FL

Dr. Long, I will always remember my radiology residency interview and training with you. I will always be grateful to you for giving me my start in radiology. You were a teacher, mentor, and friend in radiology and in life and will be greatly missed by all. My deepest condolences to your family. Douglas S. Hayes, M.D.

- Douglas Hayes, Chattanooga, TN

We have fond memories of Bobby from high school days in Somerset, KY....and feel blessed to have seen and talked with him recently at a family wedding. He will be missed by all who knew him. Our heartfelt sympathy to Phyllis and family.

- Cliff & Lynne Appleby, JAMESTOWN, KY

Dr. Long is the modern era icon of the Isle of Hope's Little Chapel. For years, he faithfully organized the congregation and served bishop or priest every first Sunday. I was an alter boy at the Chapel and I remember when the Longs moved to town. He would car pool with Dad to get us to St James school. Dr. Long had a silver Porsche 940, very exotic to a little boy, and I will never figure out how he shoehorned his children and the last of the of the Harty kids: me, Boo, and Margaret, into that sports car! Condolences to Mrs. Long and the Long clan. Nick & Tamara Harty

- Nick Harty, Savannah, GA

I was greatly saddened to hear of Dr. Long's passing. I was honored to have had the opportunity to work with him and to have the chance to know him. He cared about others and it was evident in how he interacted with folks. May the Lord provide peace and His comfort for Mrs. Long and the family.

- Danny Jenkins, Sylvania, GA

Along with others who graduated with Bobby in the Somerset High School class of 1961, I have fond memories of him: his athleticism, his sense of humor and his kindness. Especially, I remember his help with Algebra and his convincing argument that my lack of math ability was all in my mind. He would not stop until he convinced me.

- Sylvia Phelps Jones, Emerald Isle, NC

My father was a wonderful dad. He greatest love was his family. He was so proud of us and it was always reflected in his eyes. All you had to do was look at him and see how much he loved you and you know there was no other place he wanted to be. He loved my mother with all of his heart and thought she hung the moon. They were each other's best freind and were always so in love. He taught us that there is nothing we can not do with a little hard work and what ever we chose to be always be our best. He touched so many lives and we are better people for having him in ours. I loved him so much. My heart hurts.
